Cold-weather kayak fishing apparel
It's no coincedence that Holger published his little reminder about hypothermia right at the start of winter and nor is it coincidence that I be writing about Lavacore base-layer water-sports clothing right now. We've written about Shark Skin base layer apparel here before and if you're familiar with that range of clobber, you've already got an idea of what to expect from the Lavacore, which is much the same thing, but with only a few notable differences.
First and foremost, Lavacore gear is less expensive, by about 15 - 20% This will be an attractive proposition for many, simply because of the eyebrow raising price of Shark Skin stuff.
Secondly, there are some physical differences in the garments, from materials used to the final cut. Lavacore fabric consists of a fleece lined inner, a wind-proof core and a stretchy polyester outer. Lavacore certainly seems to be a bit stretchier than Shark Skin and as a result, dare I say it, more comfortable. At least, thats my experience after wearing a pair of Lavacore pants for a couple of days. I'd also hazard a guess that because they seem marginally lighter, they might not be quite as warm either. They are, however, very warm regardless. I've also found that the pants fit me better than the Shark Skin cut.
I was also impressed with their tops (vest, short and long sleeve variants), which feature more of a 3D cut to them and I'd be willing to bet these will be more comfortable as well. Already suitably impressed with the pants I can say for sure I'll soon be the proud owner of at least one of their tops. If you need a good base-layer style garment for kayak fishing (and sailing for those AI owners) and don't like the price of Shark Skin, look into Lavacore's offerings.
