Berghaus Aquafoil hat

Author: josh

Whilst snooping around Outdoors & Beyond in Nowra the other day I stumbled upon a hat that drew my attention immediately. Made by Berghaus (specialists of outdoor recreation gear), the Aquafoil hat is a functional fleece-lined waterproof & breathable peaked cap. A few of it's stand out features are that it has ear flaps (that can be folded upwards if it gets a bit warm) and a low neck line, the combination of which offer excellent protection from the sun, water and cold. I really like it's peak as well, which although only small, has a wire running the edge of the peak, allowing the wearer to shape it as desired. It's also very comfortable, fitting snug without feeling too tight (thanks to a thin bungee drawstring running through the seam of the brim).

I tested it out in Jervis Bay in less than pleasant conditions today (wind & rain prevailing in fairly rough water) and found it to be absolutely 100% perfect for the task. It's the best $40 I've spent for keeping warm on the kayak in a while. No doubt it'll be too hot for warmer days, but we don't get many of those around here lately (nor does anyone living in or south of Sydney it seems) so I reckon it'll be getting year-round use. It looks like a cross between a legionaires cap, a nazi soldiers cap and something an alpine skier might wear, but it's functionality is ideal for kayaking in cool and or wet/windy conditions.
