When I took to the Okuma Salina II reels last year, among other attributes I found suitable for open water kayak fishing, I've learned that the high-speed winding capability to be a huge plus (when compared with earlier model Salina's I'd used in the past), so when Okuma recently announced the new range of High-Speed Trio reels I was interested immediately. Not just because of the high-speed function, but partly also because my introduction to the other series of Trio reels (which I now use for all of my estuary kayak fishing) has worked out really well. Not only have I found them to be a very smooth operator I'm also rather fond of their notably light weight, a real bonus when casting & retrieving for extended periods. Add to this that the only reel I had available for my new Nitro Voodoo rod was quite heavy in comparison and a little un-balanced because of it. Naturally, when I started thinking about what I might replace it with the new and rather swish-looking High-speed Trio seemed like a no-brainer. For this particular rod (3-5kg rated) the 40S model was the ideal fit.
Once fitted to the rod and quickly running through a couple of mock-single handed casts, I felt even more confident in my choice. I think it's fair to suggest that this particular reel will be getting a thorough flogging on the water, employed in the hunt of snapper and pearlies through to pelagic surface species such as tailor, salmon, mackerel, mack and stripey tuna. I'm expecting to find mack tuna working the anchovy schools off shore this coming weekend so there's a good chance I'll get to give it a solid test real soon. I'll follow up with a full review after thoroughly putting through it's paces. In the meantime, read on to check out a video clip where it is introduced with design features discussed at the recent ICAST trade show.
As mentioned in the video, the Trio range has been the best sellers within Okuma's range since their inception, ergo it stands to reason that their new high-speed counterparts will soon be sharing shelf space right along next to them in tackle stores the world over.
