Rob Pax on Big Day Out

Rob Paxervanous has penned a brief article for Fishnet on the Hobie Island Big Day Out. Sounds like he had as much fun as the rest of us, and like myself, a little regretful that we allowed ourselves to succumb to the allure of bigger fish when we would have otherwise caught a lot more fish had we stayed with the main group.
The weather was perfect with winds shifting between 5 and 15 knots and the stunning sunshine allowed our interstate visitors to experience the white sands and grand cliffs of Jervis Bay in all their glory. Later that morning Paul O’Leary (Kayak Marlin fame) and Josh Homes (Yakkass.net fame) and I got a little overcome by big fish fever and deviated from the main fleet. Knowing that ‘JB’ has produced for us some XL kayak marlin, kingfish and other high end piscatorial treats we just couldn’t resist having a long shot at something big, but in the very brief hour or so of fishing that was left it soon dawned on us that this was an even longer shot than first thought. Those fishing lighter tackle for bonito, salmon and Tailor had more success, but we still enjoyed the brief hunt for big fish and Caitlin was delighted to see dolphins and seals amongst the bait school that milled around us.

I've just spent the past hour going through each of the video clips I have remaining on youtube (I deleted almost half of the older ones recently) and have disabled comment posting. I apologize to everyone who have taken the time to post comments there in the past, but I've had no choice but to do this due to the sheer amount of questions I get asked in those comment feeds, many of which I never get time to respond to. A lot of the time I'd really rather not to, because most of the time I've already answered the question more than once right here in this website, and I'm not a big fan of having to repeat myself. So in the description text of each of those clips I have pasted this: * For any questions & comments, go to yakass.net

47 Islands launch into beautiful Jervis Bay
10 hours was a long drive for me to undertake but knowing how well Hobie put on kayak fishing tournaments as well as sailing tournaments, I figured that their collective experience in these events would guarantee that the Hobie Island Big Day Out would be one worth attending. Although the weather could have been a little more accomodating - not to mention the fish - the Big Day Out was indeed a fantastic event. Big Weekend Out is probably a more apt description, however, because for most participants that exactly what it was. For Paulo and I it was an even bigger weekend out because we snuck out for an early fishing session around the headlands of Jervis Bay before meeting up with the many other Islanders at Paradise Point for an afternoon's cruise on the placid waters of St Georges Basin. The following day everyone gathered at Vincentia where after enjoying a continental breakfast, a fleet of just under 50 islands launched from the beach and sailed all the way out to Point Perpandicular and back.

Acrobatic aussie salmon are one of many things I miss about Jervis Bay
Originally Paulo and I were planning to head out wide in search of billfish but eventually had to concede our over-ambition. It's not that we couldn't reach our destination safely, more so that we didn't want to miss the festivities at Paradise Point, set to kick off at around midday. So instead we decided to fish for kingies around part of Bowen Island and then sail over to the northern side before fishing our way back. Although signs grew more positive the longer we stayed, we were unable to raise our target species. I did catch a couple of reasonable Aussie salmon (one on a trolled Rapala Maxrap, another on a cast Williamson Gyro jig) and Paul caught the largest slimey I've ever seen. Unfortunately, by the time we found ourselves among the baitfish we were looking for, it was getting too late to do anything about it. Oh well... there's always tomorrow we told ourselves as we head in, packed up our yaks and head for Paradise Point.

Just imagine my delightfully pride lit up face as kayak fishing finally managed to make it's way on to the front page of the Sunday paper today as I delivered them to work. For all the right reasons this time, not a death from those out of their depths but an epic 100kg marlin hooked up, fought for 90 minutes by Jeff Sheppeard 7km's off Currarong on the South NSW coast. Sure this beast may have busted him off not far from the yak, but what a fight! Many of my customers know my predilection for the sport and asked me had I seen it and was I envious? I said "Yes" and then "No" in that order. It's a good and bad thing when a capture like this makes Sunday paper headlines. A bad thing in the respect that the looney animal liberation crew will have a field day, Joe Average without any experience may try to replicate it and get into serious strife. Yet a good thing to give our very fast growing sport some recognition, and what an awesome hookup that was for him.. A big hat tip to Jeff Sheppeard for finally hooking up his first Marlin after losing years of dutifully crafted bait to sharks for so long. Great work mate!

True to form for this time of year I have missed out fishing the first round of the KFT Super Series located within the wily bream habitat of the Gold Coast. Curious to know just how tough it was this time around, I asked Shane Edyvane to provide a wrap up for us. As Justin would say, "Buckle up!"

I'm busily taking advantage of these rainy days-in by updating some of the content here at Yakass and the latest to get the treatment is the 'Which wheelcart for my kayak' guide, which has been updated to reflect new and current models, including the new TI Dolly wheels from Hobie, Solutions adjustable plug-in cart, Tastech's mighty Terminator carts (pictured above) as well as the awe-inspiring Batcart.

After setting side an hour to update my massive gear list by the time I'd spent almost 3 hours doing so, it struck me just how much I have refined my kayak fishing load out and how many changes I'd made over the course of a year. I've made so many small and not so small changes that even I have trouble keeping track of it all.
For those of you familiar with how the list appeared when first published, among the many changes you will note is how much less equipment is listed. I'll be expanding this list shortly to reflect all of the time-proven mods I've performed on my AI as well.

I've spent some quality time updating the Hobie Kayak Buyers Guide, partly to reflect recently added models (Revolution 11 and Quest 11), but also to provide more information and advice on specific models and the differences between them. This update is somewhat overdue, but I think my time and effort here has made it a better article.
A lot of the original text has been reworked to provide more information and I have also separated the range into several categories: solo paddle kayaks, tandem paddle kayaks, solo pedal kayaks, tandem pedal kayaks and trimarans.

AI/TI Hobie BIG DAY OUT, Jervis Bay 2012

Big news for the Aussie AI/TI community has broken today as Hobie's Steve Fields sends word of not one but two big day out style events dedicated to the rapidly growing trimaran kayak user-group. At this stage the events are still in the planning stages, though in a venue as grand as Jervis bay on boats as capable as the Islands, there's going to be no shortage of activitives for us to sink our teeth into... on water by day, at bar by night!
I'll be attending both events and am really looking forward to getting back to my old stomping grounds in the area, and especially looking forward to getting together with a bunch of other enthusiasts. It's going to be interesting to inspect various rigs, fitouts and compare notes and is most certain to be a fabulous platform for beginners to learn a whole lot more about their boats in a short space of time. This is going to be an event Islanders will not want to miss!
