Trolling Selection (F10)

Author: Carl

For the up coming Fraser Trip kayak fishing expedition I have gone through my collection to pull out what I feel are the best trolling lures. As in my earlier article I have matched the BIG ARSE Rapalas and Classic F18's with their more petite siblings. To round off the selection I have included a couple of top water lures and deep divers so that if required I can cover as much of the water column as possible.

Each used lure will be inspected and any suspect terminal tackle will be replaced. For trebles I use heavy duty VMC or Owner hooks either 3x or 4x strength. The split rings will either be 60 or 80lb as this is the usual weight of the leader used on this type of fishing. Once the trebles have been removed the lure will also get cleaned ready for packing. The new lures from experience will be fine as they are.

When out on the water I like to have access to as wide as possible selection so I generally pick what I think will work on the day and one or two others. This pack will be kept in the centre hatch for easy access. The main pack of lures will probably be stored behind me, just in case I do need to get to them should I lose too many lures in a session. I am still considering how best to keep them secure on the trip, as packing them all in one box with no treble covers was a PITA last time.

As you can see I mainly use 2 types of colours when trolling out wide for pelagics. That's not to say others colours don't work, we know they do. I just have decided to limit what colours I use for simplicity and the fact that I have caught fish on both. The blue mackerel pattern and colouring is what worked best for us last trip and is a firm favourite to start this trip as well. The white/redhead didn't get much of a run last time so I will try give this a bit more effort this trip.

The only lure that is 'missing' is the Rapala CD 14 but looking at what I have amassed it may not be required. However knowing my impulsive purchasing habits one will probably find its way into the collection. Now to work on the metal and plastic selection.
