Breaming Fail

I made a pretty determined effort not to catch any Jewish. My wife simply can't eat too much more. I also hadn't had an opportunity to use my new Nitro Ultrabream finesse for it's intended purpose. So I went breaming. Setting off at mid run out tide mid morning, I put in at a different boat ramp higher up the estuary. With 4lb string and FC leader loaded, a 1/16th oz jig head and a 2” shrimp profile threaded on, I was sure to catch some bream and avoid those pesky Jewfish.

Things started well. Flicking one side to gravel flats and to drop offs the other, millpond still water, things felt pretty fishy. Day before full moon, good odds. Seriously impressed at the ability of the Ultra bream to cast a lure of this weight to the strike zone on either side of the river whilst drifting down the main channel backwards with the tide. There were so many hits and takes as I put a little magic into the plastic, I just couldn't pin anything.  Maybe not striking hard enough. Always hesitant to strike too hard on 4lb leader. Then a cast under cover went zzzzzzz...ping, Tailor bite off. Ok, not a Jewie so all good.

I put myself into deeper water another Km down, a structural bream haven. That's where things went wrong. First cast? Hookup. Felt the distinct thump of a flathead on the drop. Except it wasn't. A small school jew came yakside. A quick snap and of he swam. So I cast my way up current and got a decent run, peeling a pile of drag that had to be a corker of a bream. “You've got to be Joking” I said aloud as another soapie Jewfish appeared at my side.

I'd failed to catch a bream. I did try pretty hard for another couple of hours, same story, short takes and short runs but none captured. Nothing would stick. I'll try again, I need to get some bream mojo back!
