Mullet on Lures?

The last fish I had expected to boat on a Rapala Shad Rap was a mullet. I took four different species on one today, mullet being one of them. Not a little fella either but a 40cm fork length corker that kept me entertained for a while. This is not my first lure caught mullet, nor will it be my last, but an infrequent event to say the least.I was trolling along close to a series of rocks when the lure got absolutely smashed, the reel screamed for a few seconds. Then nothing. As I reeled the lure in I thought maybe a hit and run Jack attack. I had the lure within eight feet of the yak and could see the leader knot. Then suddenly the rod bent right over and the reel started singing again as the fish went for a big run underneath the yak. It had swum straight at me after the first run. I couldn't work out what it was, thinking Trevalley at first but they've disappeared for the season now. It was holding low in the water column and kept taking line every time I tried to get colour. Eventually surfaced a very fat Bully Mullet (Mugil cephalus).

The day had started slowly. 7:30AM launch near the top of the tide. The water was far warmer than I had anticipated and there was loads of bait fish activity. The first hookup came whilst trying to send an email about how quiet the river was. A small Jewie took the Shad Rap SR05. Quickly released, not a bump for 7km of pedalling through the tide change. The water very deep green. I don't know what it is about that green colour that seems to have no action most days. Closer to home I trolled up three keeper Tailor to 40cm FL and one rat flathead. Not a bad day on the river. Most of the action happened after two hours of run-out. It was nice to land a feed of tailor before the local bull sharks got to them too.

I managed to blood the new Spyderco Caspian Salt knife and have to say I'm very impressed with it. It is the perfect tool for bleeding a fish that's for sure.
