I was able to squeeze a day off work today, inspired by flat sea predictions that held true for a kayak fishing session off shore. If I wasn't such a sissy I would have been on the water much earlier but at the turn of winter one can hardly blame me - especially when it is as windy as it was this morning. These were fresh wsw winds that were gusting up to around 20 knots at times. It didn't feel so stiff as I prepared the AI from behind the protection of the hill but I knew what awaited me on the water.
Despite sailing some 10km for the entire trip, at no stage did I need to use a full sail, reaching up to 10km an hour with only a 3rd of the sail exposed to the wind. But it was trolling along at precisely 4.5km an hour when I hooked my first fish, a modest - but pan-worthy - squire snapper. This fish fell to the trusty Predatek Hyper-Viper, which have accounted for many snapper when trolled behind a kayak.
The very same lure was responsible for the next fish, which was an even more modest tailor, which was swiftly returned. For the first time I experimented with a US branded Mann's hardbody lure, rated to dive up to 20'. I'm not yet sure which speeds these particular lures are best trolled at, but it would seem that anything faster than 8km an hour is too much for it, consistantly popping up out of the water under higher speeds. They're not expensive lures... maybe this is why.
Today's trip didn't last long as the wind continued to grow in strength and gradually became colder as well. Winter is definitely here. Fortunately, however, so are the snapper!
