Lately I've been looking further into the vast range of accessories on offer from RAM Mount, paying special attention to the composite plastic components, which I'm starting to realise are often a suitable surrogate for their metalic counterparts. In a lot of cases they're actually better, mainly because they simply won't corrode and don't have a powder coating to start flaking off (which often happens to the alternatives). Composite variants are available in various sizes of socket arms, mounting balls and rod holders. Whilst they don't seem to have the gripping power of the metal styles, they do seem to be better in every other way, and I'm starting to think that in many cases, are a better option. Luckily, they're also less expensive.
One of the product lines I discovered among the 'RAP' composite range are a series of suction cup mounts that I was curious about. Curious enough to order in some samples for inspection. I didn't have any firm ideas on what they may be used for but after having a close look and trying a couple of quick experiments it didn't take long to see where and how some kayak fishermen might put them to use.
Most obvious is the utility such a mounting system offers sit-in kayak users. Almost all sit-in style kayaks have smooth upper decks and the suction cup mounts definitely have enough holding power to be used as such. We were also very impressed with how well they stick to the smooth surface of Hobie kayak hulls, and quickly figured out several mounting options for kayaks that we'd previously struggled to find good mounting options for.
More impressed than I was expecting to be, no doubt I'll find myself recomending these to paddlers intending to mount accessories in places that might otherwise be difficult to work with. I've also thought of a few nifty spots these could be mounted on an Adventure hull that would provide for some really interesting camera angles.
