Big tides, Tough Trevally.

This last week on the upper Brunswick River has been a mixed bag. The air has a chill to it and the tides have been much larger than the official predictions, the riverbank almost disappearing at times. With the rising tide, however, have been a welcome return of kilo plus sized Giant Trevally. I had though that the recent flush of fresh had pushed all of them offshore. Yesterday I hooked up with Yak4fun and Yaka2 for a morning session in perfect conditions. The bite was very slow all day, with most hits being converted to solid hookups. I managed a rat flathead on the second cast, then nothing until a bruiser of Trevally smashed my plastic in open water in the middle of the river. He fought hard, eventually being netted grunting loudly. He was bled and stowed straight into the new Waeco Ice-Cool 22 Litre icebox on the back of the Revo. By the way, I love my new esky. Damned cold, sturdy and easy to clean.

Further downstream an Azure Kingfisher had a crack at nailing my plastic on the drop, cheeky monkey. Birdlife was rich with Whistling and Brahminy Kites impressively dive bombing XOS mullet and carrying them off torpedo style to high perches to be devoured.

Not much else happened until later in the day, when I took another three rat flathead and lost one keeper in netting distance. Yak4Fun managed a few btream, small flathead and a Trevally. Yaka2 had a small Trevalley bite off yakside. (Need to get him a good net!) No school jew to speak of, but did have a suspected hookup in one of the deeper holes. A subtle take followed by a good solid headshake then . . . nothing.

On the way back to the ramp, we bumped into 2PinkAnchors and his mum, on their maiden voyage in their new Hobie Revolutions. Happy campers by all accounts.
