I'm often asked which lure is my favourite for kayak fishing and up until I started getting down with the Adventure Island (AI) I would simply say that I really didn't have a favourite and that they all seem to work in the right situations. But when one steps up to an AI there really is no looking back and in the 2 or so years I've been fishing from that beloved yak, I certainly have stumbled upon a clear favourite - the Rapala Magnum CD series of hardbody lures. My AI fishing comrade Carl feels much the same way for much the same reasons, which is probably why he posted this heads up on high speed trolling.
There's a few reasons we're falling in love with them. First and foremost, they catch fish - lots of fish. I've hooked all sorts of species on these lures, including tunas, mackerel, snapper, trevally, tailor, sharks and even (dare I admit it) a seal. In fact the action of these lures seems to be so appealing that they often hook fish smaller than the lure as well - just last weekend I hooked a bonito on a bonito pattern 18cm model. Wow!
Another reason for this growing love affair is that they troll well at a wide range of speeds, from high to low. This makes them ideal for trolling from the AI, which is capable of going as slow as you like, or otherwise relatively fast - much faster than your average kayak. Equally important, they always provide reliable action right out of the box. These lures never seem to need tuning (unless damaged by a large fish) and thats definitely not something I can say for all brands and models *cough-Squidgy-Mackerel-Mauler cough*
Of all the trolling lures I have, Rapala Magnum CDs are my clear favourite. However, I am also fond of some of the Predatek lures - particularly the Hypervipers, which I tie on when on the hunt for Snapper. Another very popular and highly reliable brand is Halco, which many have told me are just as good as Magnums. Whilst my own results would dispute that, the recommendation comes from reliable sources, so I do persist with these as well. And like Rapala and Predatek, am yet to come across one that didn't work flawlessly out of the box every time.
Below is a video clip for the Rapala X-rap lures, which I'm also very fond of.
