FishingWorld Australia have produced a brief but informative video clip presented by tournament kayaking fishing guru Greg Lewis and Lure & Fly's Josh Carpenter, discussing the various qualities found in modern fishing kayaks (focusing on Hobie kayaks) and how to go about choosing one that's right for you. These guys know their stuff, so if you don't, pay attention! Discussed are the Hobie Outback, Revolution, Adventure Island and Pro Angler models

Rob Paxervanous has released the juiciest scenes from his recent ground breaking episode of Fishing Australia, where with the help of Yakass member Paul Oleary piloting the Tandem Island they're crusing around on, he manages to hook up to and haul in an absolute corker of a marlin. If you missed the show when it went to air, today is your luck day because this is must watch material!

Gear Mounting Systems company Railblaza's resident kayak fishing guru and fellow videographer Jason Milne passed on a link to a video clip he recently shot while playing around in the surf with the soon-to-be-released Railblaza camera mount system, which does indeed look rather impressive. The more I look at this (much like everything else I'm seeing from Railblaza) the more I like it. I'm getting a lot of ideas looking at how this works (infact, just such a system may have saved me a lost fish just this very morning) and am quite eager to put one to work for the YCKFS. I'll report back as soon as these are available.

I don't think I've ever seen such an impressive display of fish filleting. Watch how quickly this guy turns a large spanish mackerel into a couple of fat juicy fillets. Note how impossible it would be to do this if the knife wasn't sharp, nor held it's edge. I'd put money on it that his knife is not made in China.

HawaiiKayakSailing have posted a couple of short video clips on the creatively cobbled Batboat (AI/TI Hybrid trimaran) specifically featuring it's Batcart. Having very briefly experimented with the AI/TI Hybid concept I know that rigged up like this the boat can only be hauled with pontoons extended, so I can appreciate why a cart like this would make life a lot easier.

Creative AI adventurer Hullibu77 has released another video, this time showing off his eye-opening trimaran with it's splash kite and newly introduced scupper hole drainage system (for removing puddled water from the seat well). Nice one mate!
Treble hook removal

KFDU regular and Yakass member Peter Bostock (AKA Slim) has taken one for the team in order to demonstrate to the uninitiated of us how to go about removing an embedded treble hook from impaled flesh. This is actually really useful information for any fishos, not least of all the kayak fraternity, though I should add that the demonstration is pretty graphic and not for the squeemish at heart. Then again, those of us fishing with hooks of this size have no business being squeemish in the first place.
Bullhorn kayak car-topping device

Doug and I have been playing around with numerous prototypes of a suction cup equipped kayak car-topping system, something we'd been inspired to do ever since looking at Scott Lovig's Rhino flavoured version. Every prototype we made worked, but each new version better than the next. Our aim was always to keep it simple, inexpensive and capable of loading something as heavy and cumbersome as a Hobie Tandem Island. Eventually we arrived at a basic bullhorn shape bar fixed with heavy duty RAM suction cups, which are used to mount the bullhorn bar to the rear of a vehicle.
We'd experimented with bars with rollers, clothed or padded bars as well but finally decided to just use a simple PVC pipe, fed onto an aluminium tube pre-bent into shape using a pipe bender. The PVC surface is slippery enough to allow a kayak hull to glide straight on, although one could easily attach a carpeted covering if they felt the need.

Being that I haven't really spared any expenses in the numerous gear and modification experiements I've rigged up my AI, I understand why it always get surrounded by curious onlookers whenever I launch or land. To the uninitiated, seeing a trimaran kayak rigged up with rod holders, cameras, sounder/plotter, etc, can be an eye-opening experience. Because it is typically sporting fairly new equipment, it also gets a fair bit of oogling from those who've been around the block a few times.

Steve 'Couta1' Smith has a knack for catching big fish from his kayak and I'm never surprised to see some of the stonkers he pulls in. This catch caught me by surprise though. I mean, woah! Hooked in calm seas on a suspect slimey mackerel somewhere off the coast of WA, this gargantuan weighed in at an estimated 40kg, which may just be an Aussie record (I'm not sure). According to Steve this beast put up a hard-fought 15 minute fight and nearly cooked the bearings out of his reel in the process. All of the action captured on video - behold...

Bill 'Billybob' Watson sent me a quick message to let me know he's been playing around with a Zego Sports Boat and obviously pretty impressed, is planning to spend some time filming some off-shore sports fishing antics, no doubt targeting Spanish mackerel knowing Billybob like we do. Normally I wouldn't take much notice of powerboat truth be told, but that Bill was speaking so highly of it drew my curiosity. And wow - that looks like a really cleverly designed and highly capable sports boat, perfect as a fishing or diving platform. Quite a few things impressed me about the Zego, not least of which it's ability to be ridden straight into and onto the beach from surf, almost like a hovercraft, and almost as cool. This is surf landing in style.
