Paddlefield trailer

Author: josh

Despite perhaps being the shortest highlight reel I have ever compiled, this trailer of my upcoming full-length doco 'Paddlefield' was one of the hardest I have ever put together. After having set aside all of the footage planned for Paddlefield there was simply so many clips and highlights to choose from that it took a long time sorting through it to find some of the action I was looking for. While this trailer provides a feel for what the full feature will be like, it doesn't even come close to fully representing the final product, or giving too much away.

Bullhorn suction cup kayak loader

Author: josh

Doug and I came up with this simple suction cup based kayak car-topping aid, which we've called the 'Bullhorn'. We figure if it works for something as heavy as a Hobie Tandem Island, it'll work on just about anything!

Rapala Magnum CD highlight reel

Author: josh

This clip is a short highlight reel showing off some of my better catches with Rapala Magnum Countdown lures, with snippets of footage dating back from Nov 2009 to early 2011. Caught while trolling from a Hobie Adventure Island trimaran on the east coast of Australia, fish include snapper, trevally, longtail tuna, cobia, sharks, mack tuna and mackerel, roughly in that order.

Kayak fishing with sharks

Author: josh

Kayak fishing with sharks can be fun, hairy and sometimes even scary. This brief (7-min) clip is a collection of some of my shark encounter kayak fishing experiences cut together into a single narrative. It includes scenes from various catches, as well as the seriously close brush with a great white I had last winter - watch to the end to see the best part of that.

Rapala munching snapper

Author: josh

I don't have a TV, so unlike a lot of people, instead of filling my weekends watching finals events throughout September, I've been going (kayak) fishing instead. It's been a pretty good month - this clip showcases some of the action, plus a flashback at the end from earlier in the year. Kayak fishing the east coast of Australia in Spring is one of the best times to chase them, in this case (mostly) on Rapala trolling lures. The action here spans a few days yak fishing around Brooms Head & Woody Head.

Snapper on blades

Author: josh

This was my first real attempt at kayak fishing for snapper using blade style lures and even I was surprised at the results. More and more I'm liking the blade lure concept for kayak fishing, partly because they can be cast a mile, but also because they troll well and can even be jigged successfully, making them rather versatile. In the clip above most fish were caught while trolling.

The Ultimate Fishing Kayak

Author: josh

Due to popular demand I have created a fully updated clip to demonstrate how I've rigged my AI for open water kayak fishing. It's been a year or so since I released the original clip that inspired this and it that time I've learned a few new tricks and have refined the rigging of the kayak dramatically - especially for use in trimaran mode, which is how I'm showing it off here.

Nth Coast Aussie Salmon

Author: josh

A chance encounter with a large active school of Aussie Salmon with the right lure at the right time. Competing with some kind of shark to get at them, I had a blast hooking into these under-rated pound-4-pound fish

Tandem Island promo

Author: josh

This is a short promotional clip I cobbled together on behalf of Nth NSW Hobie kayak specialists, Maclean Outdoors. Never originally intended for online publication, this was really made for the benefit of potential customers with a view to answer some of the frequently asked questions we hear, demonstrating the Hobie Tandem Island, how easily it is rigged and dismantled, how it performs with one or two users using pedals, paddle and sail. Inshore and offshore footage included. We also manage to catch a few fish along the way.

War on Fish e12: Trimaran Tango

Author: josh

The 12th episode of War on Fish (and final for season 1/2010) is now ready for human consumption. In this episode viewers will observe both the Hobie Adventure Island and Tandem Island being used for sailing and with several fishing strategies in which we catch tailor, snapper and pearl perch. There's enough footage here to clearly demonstrate why the AI is my #1 ideal yak fishing platform, and probably always will be.

WoF11: Kayak fisherman's basket

Author: josh

Episode 11 underscores the mid-winter kayak fishing experience around the nth coast of NSW with a varied collection of commonly encountered fish. This 10-minute segment covers action spanning 2 days shared between Shark Bay and Brooms Head with Doug and Alby. Some nice whale watching included capped off a reasonably action packed day, that although without producing any monster fish, kept us all eating pretty well.

War on Fish: E10, Flathead

Author: josh

I don't feel at all guilty about revisting the local population of flathead for series 1 of War on Fish. Episode 10, titled  Flatwater fishing for flat-headed fish, takes place over two consequitive Sundays. The first of these I'm kayak fishing on my lonesome, the following weekend with buddies Rog and James in tow. We were later joined by Huxley and friend.
